Y outh Action Council is a select group of young men and women who have shown a desire to make West Virginia a better place. The requirements to be a member of Youth Action Council are that he or she must be a West Virginia high school student, have attended Camp Horseshoe, and also volunteer for a week at the Governor's Youth Opportunity Camp. An example of YAC in action is given below: Recently seven members of the YAC attended a Fall Workshop at Camp Horseshoe where they created a movie for the WV Fall Conference, took place in some service projects around the camp, and also learned the steps needed to create a successful community service project for the council. In the end, their service project took place at Tyler Consolidated High School, Sistersville, WV. Member Andrew VanCamp, student at Tyler Consolidated and President of TCHS’ HI-Y, was able to work with the administration to create a day of service at TCHS on the first Saturday in November. They picked up trash around the football stadium and under the bleachers, dug holes to put a sign up for the gymnasium entrance, painted signs to be placed around the county, cleaned and painted the school’s sign, and also painted a flood rock. This service project day was completed with the help of many TCHS HI-Y members who were able to have fun while helping to make valuable improvements to the school and community. | |||||
